India’s Big Power Ambitions

Filed under: India — Jag @ 6:51 pm

Are fast becoming a joke in international circles. Witness the comment made by Jason Overdorf, writing about Sarah Palin’s visit in GlobalPost: “Palin will no doubt receive a warm welcome and some easy laughs in India — an easy touch for anybody prepared to call it a major world power and wolf down a curry or two.”

Good governance, vastly improved infrastructure and sanitation, and educational and business opportunities for the underprivileged may one day make India a genuine economic power. Until then, we have to suffer through clowns like the Dravidian parties of the south that promise color tvs, rice grinders, etc to buy votes with tax rupees, and the great Indian National Congress party whose functionaries think nothing of showing US Embassy staffers their bribe war chest.

Achieving genuine progress is far more difficult than creating the illusion of improvement. Which is why we get all excited when someone throws a few undeserved words of praise at us.
